Hansi: The Girl who Loved the Swastika (PDF file) tells a very strange tale about a young Czech woman whose early allegiance to Hitler and Nazism is won back to Christianity through the power of American virtue and consumerism.

This was drawn by Al Hartley, best known for his work on Archie. The art is classical comic stylings and is quite good. The story is extremely bizarre, though.

I wonder how do people who were really there and experienced the reality react to this piece. The author writes as if this complicated relationship never existed.

Really - that's one of the things that struck me as being so surreal about the whole thing. (The rape scene - "You're lucky you're skinny, Hansi. They don't want you." The Russians like 'em big as well, it seems. - is another moment of pure weirdness.)

What makes the thing so creepy for me is that its Jack Chick style melodrama ends up making Nazism seem almost as attractive as Americanism. At least the Nazis weren't bearded bums playing guitars. Pretty slick how a former Hitler Youth leader manages to become an American schoolteacher.
