I saw an announcement on the Wikipedia front page that Firefox 1.5 has been released. So, like a fool, I download and install it.

Now every page has a large grey area beneath the status bar. Nothing I have tried to configure, click on, or enlarge will overwrite it or make it go away. It occupies maybe the bottom 1/6th of the screen, and is annoying as hell.

Is this a local and idiosyncratic result, or are you suffering the same difficulty? If you are also getting this problem, how do you get the blank space to go away and get your pages to appear in the entire window once more?

Good thing I decided not to install that sucker. There may be some information on the mozilla forums about what to do about it. What Windoze version are y running?

Fortunately, it seems that installing Mozilla 1.0.7 over top of this fixes it. Do not recommend downloading or installing this at present, though. FWIW I run WinXP Home.

We have winXP Pro and no problems so far, but we will wait to install this until they have ironed out all the flat bugs.

FWIW [livejournal.com profile] sethrenn installed it on the Toshiba running windows Me without problems.

The Mozilla equivalent of "try rebooting" is "try a fresh profile". I believe most internal config file details have changed between 1.0 and 1.5, and what you're describing sounds like profile confusion. Try a fresh profile and see if that works. You can copy the bookmarks file across (it's not hard to find, it's in the old profile called "bookmarks.html").

There are other issues I found. Linky no longer works with the new version, even though it said it did. Neither does Flashblock, apparently.

Since both of these things are vital to me, I'm going to stick around with the older version for a while yet. (And will anyone be updating AllowRightClick anytime soon?)

Yeah, waiting for extensions can be a bugger. OTOH, the dev versions of 1.5 have been around quite long enough for the extension writers to arse-enable themselves ... I'm waiting on more than a few extensions myself.

The fundamental misbehaviour - did that go away with a fresh profile?

"Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5"

Not having your problem. PC thing?

The browser was basically functional, but the large blank space at the bottom I couldn't get rid of was annoying. I wrote the entry while waiting for 1.0.7 to re-download.

The first thing I thought when I saw the big blank space down there was that Firefox was going to try to load banner ads in that space. Of course, any address likely to serve banner ads is probably already blocked in hosts file, so I saw nothing.

Hah, add one more Firefox 1.0.6 user (well, set of users) who are going to wait around a bit until that's fixed. We've got too many different profiles that we depend on to have to "start fresh" again.

Plus, it's really annoying to have to go get all the extensions you had before-- especially the useful ones that suddenly don't work, like you've said.

It was like this a bit with 1.0.4, and we all hated that experience...
