Madame Nhu 1924 - 2011
Apr. 25th, 2011 03:13 pmTrần Lệ Xuân, better known as Madame Nhu, has died. She was the widow of the brother and chief advisor to President Diem, the president of Vietnam during the early years of the Vietnam war. President Diem was betrayed by the US government and ousted in a CIA supported coup; he was not particularly popular.
Madame Nhu was not a pleasant person either. She promoted Roman Catholicism at the expense of Buddhism, and laughed at the "barbecues" made by protesting monks who set themselves on fire.
But damn it, she had a name that was straight out of pulp fiction. And for that I will forgive much. She was not an unattractive woman in those days.

But the image formed in your mind's eye by the name "Madame Nhu" is probably going to be even better.
