I suspect the most enjoyable thing about Outlander is the broad assurance it gives, by plot and genre, that most of its main characters are fairly well plot-armored and won't be killed for cheap effect.
Actually, something I find very enjoyable about the series (novels) is the many ways in which characters, even minor characters, from earlier books show up again in later books. The world was smaller in certain ways -- the population of people with whom one would be familiar would tend to cross paths over and over, even in different countries, over time.
I've not read the books, just started the TV show. This factor already figured into it; when she announced she was from Oxfordshire, there were names she was expected to recognize. (North America would have been a better backstory for her.)
