Strange old illustration

There's something deeply disturbing about this old illustration from Sam Loyd's 1912 Cyclopedia of Games:





I think it's mostly the way King Ferdinand looks like the "After" picture of Dorian Gray. Christopher looks only slightly less addled, and the jester carrying the candy cane and gesticulating is perhaps scarier than either of those two. Only Isabella looks slightly normal; even the chicken seems depraved.
